"No body, but he who has felt it, can conceive what a plaguing thing it is to have a man's mind torn sunder by two projects of equal strength, both obstinately pulling in a contrary direction at the same time." In the novel A Lesson Before Dying Grant mind is pulled in conflicting directions by one compelling desire and an obligation. Grant loves his Aunt Emma. He feels as though it's his job to listen to her, make her happy, and do whatever he is asked to do. One of his desires is to move out of Aunt Emma's and go somewhere far away not only by himself but with Vivian. These both illuminates the meaning of his work as a whole.
Grant feels obligated to make Ms. Emma happy I believe. Tante Lou asks Grant to go teach Jefferson, he doesn't want to do it but the only reason he really did it was because Ms. Emma urged him to do it, and forced him to do it so he couldn't really say no. When he tells her one night that he's going to eat at a diner, it upsets her. He knows it upsets her but he still does what he wants. He's torn in between what he wants to do and what Ms. Emma always wants him to do. He wants to do whatever he wants to do but in the back of his head It's like he doesnt want to disappoint his aunt.
